Born on 26th June 1987 in Port Elizabeth, Asanda Mqiki is a versatile vocalist who is determined to break all barriers and let her voice be heard across all world stages. Asanda studied contemporary music at the National School of Arts where she was groomed and there she learnt her true ability of her talent. Not only does she have the title of being a jazz vocalist under her belt but she is also a voice lecturer, song writer and a music director.
Based in Port Elizabeth, Asanda was a member of a jazz band called Take Note where she was their leading vocalist. They released 2 studio albums, “Rear window” and “And the Journey Begins”. In 2011 the band performed at the Joy of jazz. There they were amongst jazz idols and with such a platform it served to show just how much of a command her voice has. With a background in contemporary music and jazz, and her exceptional good taste in arts, Asanda’s short career has wowed audiences in different parts of the country.
Since her solo act took off she has shared stages with the likes of Sibongile Khumalo, The Soil, Putuma, Khaya Mhlangu and many more. Asanda has had a production at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival in 2014 and 2015 where she showed her versatility as a performing artist. In 2015 she was awarded the Standard Bank Gold Ovation award at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. She was also award the MEC Individual Performer of the Year award for 2015.She is not shy to involve herself with other forms of art i.e. theatre. Her skill is not only in singing but in directing and creating music, and guiding other vocalists in tapping into their inner voices.
In 2014, Asanda performed in Sweden at the World Culture Music Club.
